The work begins with understanding the decision behind the appointment.

01 | Background
James D. White Sr. founded Ashford Leadership Partners around a simple principle: senior appointments deserve more thought than a list of available candidates.
His approach begins with the decision the organisation is trying to make. What has changed? Why is the appointment needed? What does the board need from the next leader? What capabilities already exist? What needs to change, and what must remain stable? Those questions shape the search.
James remains closely involved in senior client relationships and significant leadership assignments. His focus includes chief executive and managing director search, C-suite appointments, board and NED search, succession, executive assessment, leadership advisory, market mapping, talent intelligence, leadership team composition, and transformation and growth leadership.
02 | How I Work
James believes the strongest searches begin before the first candidate is contacted. A familiar name is not necessarily the right appointment, and a strong résumé does not automatically demonstrate relevance. The central question is whether the person can succeed here, at this point, under these conditions.
Clarify what has changed, why the appointment matters now and what the board needs from the next leader.
Consider ownership, culture, scale, stakeholders and the strategic challenge before defining the profile.
Examine how and where prior success was achieved rather than relying on title or reputation.
Remain close to the client through assessment, decision and the early transition where appropriate.
“The purpose of executive search is not to produce the longest list of names. It is to give the client a clearer view of the decision they are actually making.”

06 | Working Principles
Past performance must be understood in the setting where it was achieved.
Recommendations should withstand careful questioning.
The client should hear what the market and assessment evidence actually show.
The relationship should remain useful beyond acceptance of an offer.

08 | Selected Search Experience
Selected mandates are confidential and are therefore described by sector and leadership context rather than client name.
